Welcome To The Team, CBD

Athletes are known to put a lot of stress on their bodies, with positive and negative effects.

Training stress stimulates adaptation and increased performance, but the physical trauma and prolonged wear and tear can also lead to more injuries and pain.

Sure, you could say current methods of pain management are effective, but they’re also killing people.

If there was an option for a safer pain reliever and improved sports recovery, should you be making the switch?

What defines being an athlete?

Merriam-Webster defines it as “a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina.”

Meanwhile, the top entry on Urban Dictionary is more inclusive: “An individual who participates in sports”.

Therefore, no matter which way you look at it, any of us who participate in exercise or sports can be an athlete. We don’t have to be a professional to consider ourselves an athlete.

Welcome to the Team CBD

When it comes to supplements and substances being used by athletes, especially professional athletes, it can be challenging to find what is safe, effective, preferably natural, and allowed by the anti-doping laws.

Thankfully, there is a new player in town.

Welcome to the team, CBD.

CBD Benefits for athletes

CBD is continuing to grow in popularity amongst athletes who recognize the recovery benefits CBD has to offer.

These benefits can include:

  • pain relief without using NSAID’s ( Ibuprofen ) or Opiods
  • reduce inflammation
  • recovery
  • rest/relaxation
  • better quality sleep
  • enhance blood flow
  • improve mood
  • reduce stress
  • protect brain health & function
  • and more!

It is important to always check with your organizations rules for what is allowed and what is not. Although, with CBD no longer being on the World Anti- Doping (WAD) list of controlled substances, we could be seeing CBD make big moves in the sports industry.

2020 Research Study

As we already know, CBD interacts directly with the human endocannabinoid system, aka ECS. This system is known for controlling pain, inflammation, mood and appetite. By interacting with these receptors, the impact on the body and the brain response is proven beneficial.

So, you might be wondering, can CBD improve athletic performance? How exactly can it help my training? Recovery?

“In a 2020 review published by Sports Medicine, preclinical animal studies and clinical trials with non-athletes, researchers found that CBD could help promote both physiological and psychological as well as biochemical benefits that could help athletes. A key factor in this was found directly linked to CBD’s ability to alleviate inflammatory pain linked with tissue damage, and neuropathic pain due to nerve irritation or damage. This could be a gamechanger for action and endurance sport athletes who are subject to high-intensity and impact movements as well as repetitive and long-distance workouts that can lead to inflammation and irritation or injury” (BikeMag).  It goes without saying that adding CBD to any sports training regime would be smart. CBD can aid in reducing pain and inflammation due to athletic injuries as well as lead to a shorter recovery period. CBD for athletes can be consumed through oil and tinctures for overall body wellness  or through a topical ointment to target specific areas.
