The Best Kind of Wake and Bake: Coffee & Weed

coffee and weed

Coffee and weed.

Sounds like the perfect weekend morning. Add in some pancakes/ waffles, eggs, bacon, hashbrowns and the couch and I’m all about it.

Being that coffee and weed are the most commonly consumed psychoactive chemicals in the world, it only make sense as to why people mix the two together.

But, have you ever sat and thought about what actually happens when you do mix the two?

Also side note: are you a coffee with some creamer? Or a creamer with a little coffee kind of drinker?

Caffeine and Cannabis

When consumers combine the two, they can create compounded effects on the body and mind due to the influence of each on their own.

Caffeine influences our adenosine receptors; which stimulate the central nervous system (CNS) and dilates blood vessels, while compounds in cannabis influence the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and actually inhibits the CNS.

You may have been told that the two cancel each other out, it’ll be fine. Although, that is not necessarily 100% true.

The truth is, mixing coffee with weed, or weed with your coffee, however you look at it, impacts everyone differently. This all depends upon a variety of factors, such as which cannabinoids you consume, the method of consumption, the dosage, your body’s ECS and your personal tolerance.

“For some users, caffeine can drastically improve a cannabis high. One 2017 animal study suggests that simultaneous intake of weed and coffee increases levels of vital CNS neurotransmitters, including the “feel-good” chemical dopamine, leading to feelings of euphoria. It’s also possible that active compounds in cannabis work to stimulate adenosine receptor activity, which could enhance a caffeine buzz” (Weedmaps).

Big ol’ Cup of Joe and a Joint

There is anecdotal evidence that suggests mixing coffee and cannabis can help enhance the energizing effects. For some, isn’t that the point?

Those who prefer to wake and bake with THC reported feelings of increased energy, alertness, creativity, and motivation. A 2011 animal study reported low levels of caffeine may enhance and prolong a cannabis high (Weedmaps).

On the other hand, a 2018 clinical study examined metabolite levels in coffee drinkers. Researchers discovered that an increased caffeine intake may actually slow down the endocannabinoid system from metabolizing at its normal rate. This means that the of coffee and weed combination may actually make it more difficult for you to relax (Weedmaps).

What About CBD?

We’ve all seen heard about them by now, those yummy CBD-infused coffee drinks. So what happens when you have coffee and CBD? That must balance either out right?

“Anecdotal evidence suggests that the combination of CBD and coffee can increase a person’s alertness and focus, but without the jittery buzz typical felt from coffee” (Weedmaps).

Sounds good to me.
