When shopping for cannabis strains you may notice they are often put into three categories: indica, sativa and hybrid. Most cannabis users will use the strain categories to determine the effects of the “high” . Do you know the difference between all three?
THE 411 of Indica vs. Sativa
Usually, when users think of marijuana strains they associate the indica strains as sedating and relaxing whereas the sativa strains are uplifting and energizing. Hybrid strains are thought to have a mix of both indica and sativa effects. Indica does not always mean ” in da couch” and sativa does not necessarily energize all users.
Thankfully, research surrounding cannabis continues to take place and we are able to learn more about the cannabis plant itself. We know that the chemical compounds in each strain, meaning the cannabinoids and the terpenes, will determine the effects consumers feel. Did you know the origins of those two terms are rooted in botany and not effects ?
However, in today’s cannabis world the belief that indica, sativa and hybrid strains each deliver distinctly different effects is still rooted in the cannabis culture.
A quick history lesson
Where do the terms indica, satia and hybrid came from?
According to Leafly, back in 1753, Carl Linnaeus published Species Plantarum, which classified all cannabis palnts under one group, “Cannabis sativa L.”. ” Cannabis” as the genus, “sativa” as the species, and “L.” indicating Linnaeus’ system. “Sativa” comes from the Latin “sativum,” meaning “cultivated.”
Later in 1785, French biologist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck updated the naming with two distinct species. One, “Cannabis sativa,” a tall, lankie, and more fibrous plant. Two, “Cannabis indica,” a short, stout, and more psychoactive plant. Its name meaning “from India,” where it was thought to originate.
It’s cool to think these definitions refer to each weed types physical structure and are still being used today so many decades later.
