It’s crazy to think we are in the year 2023 and now the term “edibles” doesn’t just refer to the typical “pot brownies” we use to bake back in the day.
A New Era of Edibles
These days, edibles come in various forms. Edibles can be gummies, candy, cookies, chocolate covered fruit, potato chips, beefy jerky, seltzers, water, and more. Cannabis has come so far that now you can enjoy a cannabis infused multi-course meal. Many edibles mask the taste and smell of cannabis which is a game changer for many users. Edibles are a great option for users who don’t love the taste/smell or who prefer to be a little more discreet.
Edible Dosing 101
If you are new to edibles or do not typically smoke marijuana, we recommend you proceed with caution. Both methods, meaning consuming edibles and smoking will get you high but there are some important differences between the two.
According to Leafly, edibles are processed in our stomach and liver whereas smoking enters through the lungs and absorbed into the bloodstream. Therefore, edibles are going to feel stronger and the effects will last longer. When consuming edibles, they have to be digested and metabolized and can take up to two hours for the high to peak. Then, the high will decrease over the next three hours or so. When smoking cannabis, the effects usually peak within 10 minutes and last about an hour or so. Edibles are strong but technically deliver a smaller concentration of cannabinoids to the bloodstream. Edibles deliver 10% to 20% of THC compared to inhaled cannabis delivering around 50% to 60% of THC.
It is important to monitor just how much of an edible or THC you have consumed. Too much can lead to unwanted effects such as paranoia, anxiety, panic attacks, uncontrollable shaking, hallucinations and sudden high blood pressure. As always, we recommend starting slow, waiting 1-2 hours and increasing the dosage from there. Most edibles from a dispensary will come in 5 mg or 10 mg doses. Check the label for the dose amount and if needed, you can cut the product into smaller pieces. If you were to become “too high”, don’t panic and try to distract yourself with eating, drinking, watching tv or taking a nap. Did you know that chewing on peppercorns can help bring you down from a high?
A Guideline to Edible MG
Here’s a basic guideline to edibles and their milligrams, according to Leafly:
- 1 to 2.5 milligrams – Micro dose for first time and regular consumers.
- 5 milligrams– Standard use for consumers.
- 10 milligrams – For high tolerance users.
- 20 milligrams – For significantly high-tolerance users.
- 50 to 100 milligrams – For experienced high-tolerance users.
