Feeling Too High? 5 Ways To Sober Up!

high

Don’t worry it happens to all of us. You just smoked the most perfect joint, timed that dab perfectly, ate a delicious edible and now you are feeling a little unsure of what is happening. Your happy and mellow high euphoria turns into panic and paranoia. You start to think, ” What is wrong with me?”, ” Am I dying?”, “Help me”.

Nope, you are just too high. Marijuana can sneak up on you in a ton of ways and when it does, things get uncomfortable. Thankfully, the effects will eventually dissipate and you’ll be back to your usual self.

Let’s talk about being too high.

Signs You are Too High

  • anxiety
  • panic
  • paranoia
  • confussion
  • dizziness
  • nausea
  • excessive sweating

why does this happen?

It may feel like something is wrong and you are dying, but you are alive, my friend. Remember, that high you get from using marijuana comes from THC. THC binds with theCB1 receptors of our endocannabinoid systems, which work in our brains. So, just like your friend is telling you, it’s in your head. Take a breath, it will be okay.

Here are a few tips and tricks that can help you when you are in need of sobering up.

5 Tips to help Sober up when you “green out”

1. Don’t Panic, keep calm and rest

Easier said than done, of course. Most symptoms will lessen and dissipate over a few hours, with no long lasting effects. Trust us, give it some time and it will pass. It is worth mentioning that there have been zero reported cannabis deaths. You will be ok.

Find a calm and quiet place, and take a deep breath in through your nose and out from your mouth. Focus on the sound of your breath and just rest. Sometimes, sleeping is a great way to stopping an intense high but it can be hard to turn your brain off. If you can’t sleep, just make yourself comfortable until you are ready to get back up.

2. Drink water and eat a snack

Think about it, water is the key to hydration. Hydration is the answer to sobering up. Have a nice cold glass of water, or any non-caffeinated beverage of choice. This will help with dry mouth and focus on sipping and swallowing. We dont recommend alcohol as this may increase the THC blood concentrations.

Some users find comfort in snacking to keep the grounded. Find a snack and see if you can focus a little better. Remember your favorite munchie foods? Eat those for fun, too.

If that doesn’t work, find black peppercorn. Just chew or sniff a few black peppercorns and it should provide almost instant relief. While it has not been proven, many of the terpenes in black pepper also appear in various cannabis strains. This may contribute to it’s grounding effects.

3. Know your limits and don’t push it

If you can, try to prepare according to your tolerance level.

If you know that 2-3 puffs makes you anxious, stick with 1-2. If you eat an extra gummie and you can’t accomplish anything for a few hours, don’t push past your comfort zone. Take it slow, you can always increase dosage if and when needed. Don’t fall into the peer pressure around you.

This likely won’t help if you have already pushed past your limits but it can prevent an uncomfortable situation next time.

4.Find a distraction

You know those things you enjoy when you’re high? Do them anyways. Find any distraction and focus on that. For example,

  • watch a funny show/movie
  • play video games
  • listen to music
  • talk to those around you
  • make a snack
  • try a calming activity
  • take a nap
  • go for a walk outside

Whatever it may be for you, give it a try. When you are distracted and enjoy it, your brain will focus on the happy and positive feelings and remind you that you are safe and ok.

5. Take a shower

It may not always be an option depending on where you are but if you are home try taking a shower or a bath. This can help you relax while you wait for the uncomfortable effects to subside. Anecdotal evidence shows that showers will likely mellow your high. In general, showers help calm the body and mind. A cold shower can help make you feel more alert and grounded.

IF ALL ELSE FAILS

Hopefully, something on the list above will help you. If for some reason it doesn’t, seek medical attention if you are having a cannabis-induced anxiety attack. This option is always available, even in states where cannabis is illegal.

Don’t be so hard on yourself, it happens to all of us. Now you know for next time and can prepare in advance.
