What is Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is a common condition that causes pain in the heel. A thick, strong band of tissue called the plantar fascia supports the arch of the foot. This tissue can become damaged or inflamed, causing pain and difficulty moving the foot.
According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, plantar fasciitis accounts for about 80% of cases of heel pain. An estimated 10% of people will experience this problem during their lifetime.
(True story: I’ve had this issue and it’s awful. My doctor literally tried to throw away my Nike’s in his exam room because he could bend my shoe in half and said they were “garbage”. The shoes I paid over $100 for and he’s trying to throw them away. Anyways, in all seriousness, if you can bend your shoe in half, that is not a shoe you should be wearing.
Here’s your reason to go buy new shoes.
Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis
- stabbing pain near the heel
- pain might be worst in the morning
- pain upon standing when sitting for a long period of time
A 2022 overview of plantar fasciitis explains that the condition occurs when the plantar fascia, a ligament in the heel, degenerates and becomes irritated. This ligament is important for movement, shock absorption, and flexibility in the foot. People who have this condition may have trouble moving or excercising comfortably, develop pain, infections and bone contusions, and are more prone to injury if they fall.
Plantar fasciitis will not necessarily have one single cause.
Several risk factors can increase a person’s likelihood of developing this condition.
Risk factors such as:
- age between 40-70
- overweight
- pregnancy
- flat feet, high arches or tight calf muscles
- particpating in running, jumping or ballet
- tight Achilles tendons
- have an inward pronation (ankle turns inward as you walk)
- do anything with repetitive foot impact
- often wear high heels
- spend a lot of time standing, especially on hard surfaces
- wear shoes with thin soles or without arch support
CBD for Plantar Fasciitis
Thankfully, we know that CBD can help with the pain and inflammation.
Research is limited surrounding CBD and pain, however, many studies have proved the benefits of using CBD to reduce pain and inflammation. For example, a 2015 study researched rat models with arthritis. It found that CBD successfully lowered inflammation without any evident side effects.
Other treament options for plantar fasciitis:
