CBD FOR PETS
Just like for their owners, CBD has shown many benefits for animals with a variety of health conditions including, but not limited too, inflammatory problems, seizures, pain relief, cancer and anxiety.
The same goes for the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The goal of the human ECS and the animal ECS is the same; to achieve and maintain a homeostasis of all the processes in the body. Wow, how cool is that? It is important to remember that every pet’s ECS may function a little differently, therefore CBD may work better for same pet’s than others.
Think About It
If you are considering trying CBD for your pet, you are in the right place. We are here to help you. As always, we recommend doing your own research as well as speaking to your Veterinarian about the option and if this may be the right choice and your pets’ health.
Think about it . Just like us, our animals do not need to be on prescribed medications 24/7. There are other options. There are always better options. We live in a world where we must advocate for ourselves and for our furry friends.
If you and your veterinarian decide CBD would be best for your pet’s health condition(s) there are a few things to keep in mind; dosage and and the form of CBD. Be sure to follow their instructions on dosing and discuss the benefits of treats, oils, topical products, etc.
Currently, there are no FDA approved products for use in animals and unfortunately not enough research studies taking place to determine efficacy and safety. As with humans, it is best to start with a low dosage and increase when/where necessary. It is important to work with a veterinarian who has experience using CBD for treatment in animals.
Finding the right one
The next step is finding the right CBD product. Sometimes it takes a few tries to determine which is the most beneficial.
CBD products meant for humans may be the same being used for animals. If the prescribed product is not made specifically for animals, be sure to read the label and check the ingredients list for chocolate, artificial sweeteners and some essential oils as these are toxic to pets. Some pet specific CBD products are made with furry friends in mind and may taste like chicken or fish (Good Rx).
Due to the fact that our beloved pet’s cannot communicate if they are feeling better after receiving CBD, it it best to monitor their behaviors. After giving a dose of CBD, keep an eye on your pet to see if their symptoms appear to be improving or not. Depending on the health condition your pet has, some symptom relief may not happen within 30 mins and could take up to a few weeks of consistently using to notice a difference.
As we have mentioned before, CBD impacts every pet differently. If your vet recommends you try CBD, you may have to try various brands, doses and forms to see what works best for your four-legged friend.
As with any form of medication, there is the risk of side effects. The side effects of using CBD for our pets is very similar to those humans may experience. The most common would include changes to appetite, fatigue, and diarrhea.
Contact your vet with any questions or concerns . Wishing you and your pets all the best!
