CBD For Arthritis

cbd for arthritis

Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States and is affecting around 54.4 million people. Did you know there are more than 100 types of arthritis?

What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is the swelling and tenderness of one or more joints. The main symptoms of arthritis are joint pain and stiffness, which typically worsen with age.

The most common types of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition wherein a person’s immune system attacks their joints, causing inflammation. It commonly affects the hands and feet and leads to painful, swollen, and stiff joints. Whereas, osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition that affects joint cartilage and bones, causing pain and stiffness. It often affects the hip, knee, and thumb joints.

Treatment Options

Pain is a symptom of all types of arthritis but these conditions do not all act alike. Unfortunately, what works for one condition may not work for another.

Treatment for arthritis is aimed at at reducing the pain and stiffness and maintaining function for all the various types.

For rheumatoid arthritis, conventional prescription medications are highly recommended because these can help prevent joint damage and worsening disability (Medical News Today). Maybe you or someone you knows has tried Prednisone, Xeljanz, and Celebrex.

What if these medications are not working effectively? What if they have undesired side effects? Is there something else that can help?

As we know, there is always another option. CBD is that other option.

CBD For Arthritis

The Arthritis Foundation  reports that “there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that some people with arthritis who use CBD report noticeable pain relief, improved sleep, or reduced anxiety” (Medical News Today).

2006 study found that a cannabis-based mouth spray called Sativex helped relieve arthritis pain. However, the cannabis plant extracts that the company uses to make the spray contain both CBD and THC.  The National Centers for Complementary and Integrative Health state that cannabis or CBD could have modest benefits for chronic pain.

So far, much of the researching surrounding CBD for chronic pain has focused on neuropathic, or nerve-related pain. The Arthritis Foundation caution that CBD could interact with certain arthritis drugs. They recommend talking to a doctor before trying CBD when taking specific medications such as Prednisone, Xeljanz, Celebrex, and even some antidepressants.

CBD oil appears promising as a treatment for arthritis-related pain. Scientifically, if it affects the receptors in the brain and immune system in the way that researchers believe, it could aide and reduce inflammation and pain.
